Bill Viola, the return

Everything flows, everything changes,

Everything is born and dies,

Nothing stands still.

Everything is diluted,

that it has a beginning it has an end,

What is the born, dies,

and compounds discompose.

Everything flows, nothing stand still, is part of the thinking and ideas of philosophers such as Heraclitus or Parmenides, both from the pre-socratic school and studying the human phenomenon among VI-Vcenturies B.C. Just one hundred years after this premise would be followed by the teachings of Siddharta Gautami, commonly called Buda. And now again, almost at the end of XX century Bill Viola reflects this idea in his video-installations. The idea of impermanence, the passage of time is present in the work of the american artist.

Water, a constantly moving element that speaks to us about the pass of time, is used in many of his works. Viola through the use of performance and body art, converting his works in video-installations, in which he always interprets life and death in some way. and thus explain Viola's fixation by water, the idea of drowning, as a "metaphor of the wonderful world of suspension". This obsession haunts him from his childhood when he almost drowned,

"The return" is part of a Transfiguration series, in which he was involved between 2007-2008. "3 women", "the passing", "visitation" or "the return" have in common water, light and the catharsis of the passage from life to death. With an aesthetic that remind us of Renaissance scenes but within a zen look. His use of ultra-slow motion video encoring the viewer to sink into the image and connect deeply to the meaning contained within.

In "the return" Viola uses just shades of grey and intensive red, to define death and life simultaneously. Both colors are symbolic and refer to us to something more spiritual than earthly.

Todo fluye, todo cambia,
todo nace y muere,
nada permanece,
todo se diluye;
lo que tiene principio tiene fin,
lo nacido muere,
y lo compuesto se descompone.

Todo fluye nada permanece, es parte del pensamiento e ideario de filosofos como Heraclito ó Parménides, ambos de la escuel presocrática y que estudian el fenomeno  humano entre los siglos VI -V a.c. , tan solo 100 años despues es parte de lasenseñanzas de Siddharta Gautami,  comunmente llamado Buda.   unos siglos despues Bill Viola plasma esta idea en sus videointalaciones. la idea de transitoriedad, el paso del tiempo esta presente en la obra del artista  estadounidense.


El agua, elemento en continuo movimiento que nos habla del paso del tiempo, es utilizada en muchos de sus trabajos. Viola  atraves de la utilizacion de performance y body art con vierte sus obras en video-instalaciones en las cuales siempre interpreta la vida y la muerte de alguna manera. Y es así como se explica la fijación de Viola por el agua, la idea del ahogamiento como "una metáfora del maravilloso mundo de la suspensión". Obsesión que le persigue desde niño cuando estuvo a punto de ahogarse.

EL retorno es parte de la serie de videos Transfiguraciones que realizo Bill Viola en 2007-2008 . "3 mujeres", "the passing", "visitation" o "the return", Tienen todos en comun el agua, la luz, y la catarsis del paso de la vida a la muerte. Con una estetica que nos remite a escenas renacentistas bajo una mirada zen. El uso del video a cámara lenta alenta al espectador a sumergirse en la imagen y a conectar profundamente con los significados que contiene.
En el retorno viola solo utiliza una gama de grises y un intenso rojo para definir la muerte y la vida simultaneamente. Ambos colores son simbolicos y nos remiten a algo mas espiritual que terrenal.
